Making Plans To Plant Again

This week our students were able to get some work done on the farm with our Master Gardener friends, Farm Parents and Teachers.

We decided that the Square Foot planting system would be good to try in the raised beds this year.
Our beds were measured off and strings were put in place to give thirty-two 12 inch squares per bed.

Students were paired with a partner, so that they could share a square and learn what they could plant in their plot for maximum growing space.

The kids also reviewed the important needs of plants and learned about the theory of square foot gardening and why it is a great method for small spots.

We will meet back in 3 weeks to actually plant the squares and with nurturing, water and luck, we will have a plentiful harvest. Our gardening knowledge keeps growing and blossoming out on the Farm. We also have a lot of fun! We can't wait to plant!

Morning Mile Club

Part of our Healthy Zone School initiative involves students and  improving their level of fitness. Before school in the past, our older students sat in the cafeteria and waited until the bell rang to go to class. Some students were there, just sitting, for up to 20 minutes. We showed them the science behind our walking program (see image below), and they easily bought into our plan.

With walking comes increased brain activity, neurons get fired up and the kids are eager and ready to learn when the bell rings and they end up in their seats.

The NFL Fuel Up To Play 60 program stresses the importance of kids getting their 60 minutes of play/exercise every single day. Since we have PE 3 times a week, Take 9 (an additional 9 minutes of exercise/movement in the classroom) and 10 minutes of recess each day, we are able to provide all of that time at school, when our kids walk in the morning. It is a win/win for everyone!

We are at the 5 mile mark in 3 weeks. Check back to see how far we walk and how happy and healthy our students at Moss Haven are getting. E I E I O..., watch us grow healthy kids!

National Day Of Service 2014

Our MLK National Day Of Service was a great day for our Farm. Over 100 adults and kids showed up to lend a hand and accomplish a ton of work. Our community is amazing, strong and hard workers. Thanks to all who came out to support our farming efforts. It was a great day!

Our farm is a better place because of the community we build!
