Moss Haven Farm Goes to the White House

Tickets to attend this annual White House event are open to people all over the country. For the third year in a row, we have won them through our Moss Haven Farm social media prescence as well as the annual lottery. The First Family opens up the People's House to 30,000 lucky ticket holders. This year didn't disappoint! We played and learned and experienced history on the South Lawn of the White House.

These opportunities to nationally represent our farm opens up doors for our program and community. We are thankful for this chance to connect with others around the country who work passionately to educate kids about the importance of living healthy lifestyles.

Oh.., and I left the many Moss Haven letters that were written on the White House lawn. Hoping that Mrs. Obama takes us up on our offer to stop by and see all the wonderful things that we have growing on our farm.

Many lessons were learned and fingers are crossed that we get to roll again for many years to come.

Spring Has Sprung!

We celebrated Spring with a lot of activity this week. All classes came out to plant the last of our cool season crops and a few early warm ones. We have lettuce, kale, onion, garlic, potato, squash, cucumber, swiss chard, broccoli, cauliflower, beans, tomatoes, basil and eggplant. They worked together in groups to tend their beds, dig, plant and water their crops.

Our 6th graders are learning about a business plan by actually creating an herb business. We have sold fresh organic herbs at the Dallas Farmers Market for the last 4 weeks and each week, our sales have increased. We are 1/2 way to paying off our initial investment, and planned some strategies to increase sales in the next month. Thanks to Grow North Texas and Market Provisions for giving us this opportunity as we are filling a niche of growing and selling specialty herbs at the Dallas Farmers Market. Stop down on the weekend and check it out.

We had our 3rd annual Triple Play 60 Day, where each class spent 60 minutes playing.  The kids had a fun run, played sport court games and learned yoga on the farm in the shade. It was a great way to celebrate our partners in health.

We love the Spring and the new growth that we see everyday. E I E I O....,

A Tree is nice. Planting new seeds. Volunteers come to work.

This week was another great week! One of our Moss Haven families brought us a tree, a beautiful tree, at that! So, many lessons revolved around the importance of trees in our lives. Ask your kids about it. They shared a lot of information about trees, sketched trees and even hugged trees.

Timing is everything when planting veggies. So, we took advantage of beautiful weather and planted our carrots, lettuces, swiss chard, spinach, radishes, kale and arugula. The kids really know what they are doing and I got to sit back and watch them work together to get the job done.

Because we are a North Texas Food Bank Partner Garden, friends from around the Metroplex came by to help install our new art work and move mulch. We got so much accomplished and are so thankful for all who come to support us with strong backs and great service!

Even though it is not Spring on the calendar, we are in full bloom. Check back next week to see what is popping up.
