State Fair of Texas - Chicken Style

We love the State Fair of Texas and are poultry-proud to show our very own Moss Haven Farm hens at the annual Poultry Show. This year marks the 3rd year that we have brought our 4H kids and chicks to compete and we won big! We earned ribbons in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th for Showmanship and our hens did quite well too. We still have bragging rites on our egg production, winning the Best Egg Content in the the state! Way to go kids and chickens! Can't wait until next year! #EIEIO.., it's off to school to grow.

Cucumber Beetle - Garlic Planting - Storybook Pumpkins - It's Fall You All!

October is a whirlwind of a month. With the beginning of fall, we welcome garlic planting time and pumpkins. We don't welcome Cucumber Beetles, but they arrive as unwelcome guests and we make a plan to get rid of them. If we don't deal with them in the fall, they lay eggs that hatch in the spring and then the cycle of trying to control them begins again. Armed with 450 kids and a bucket of soapy water, we became a school garden army in a war against this pesky insect. We also planted garlic, which we will soon have sprouting all over the farm. We patiently wait for 6 months and then celebrate the garlic bulbs in April. Farming teaches patience and perseverance, among many other things. Finally we celebrated the pumpkin, one of our favorite veggies! Read on!

A Farmer Goes to China

I was so excited to find out that I was selected to represent the United States as a Delegate to the Slow Food International Congress in Chengdu, China,  It was a great honor to work with 400 other Delegates, from ninety different countries who are passionate about our food system, equality and our environment. My circle of friendship and connections grew globally and so did I. My take away from this experience is that we really are one world dealing with many of the same food and climate issues, and most importantly, we are stronger together! This opportunity has changed my views and fueled my fire to educate people about the problems and solutions of repairing our planet and each other. More to come for sure!
