October is a whirlwind of a month. With the beginning of fall, we welcome garlic planting time and pumpkins. We don't welcome Cucumber Beetles, but they arrive as unwelcome guests and we make a plan to get rid of them. If we don't deal with them in the fall, they lay eggs that hatch in the spring and then the cycle of trying to control them begins again. Armed with 450 kids and a bucket of soapy water, we became a school garden army in a war against this pesky insect. We also planted garlic, which we will soon have sprouting all over the farm. We patiently wait for 6 months and then celebrate the garlic bulbs in April. Farming teaches patience and perseverance, among many other things. Finally we celebrated the pumpkin, one of our favorite veggies! Read on!
