Chicken Love

Thursday night was Open House. It's that annual event where kids clean their desks, lay out their best work and teachers reapply their lipstick to great families in the evening. This year, Open House was a memorable one for our school community because a baby chick hatched during the event, as if on cue.

Kids and parents gathered around to get a look for themselves of the miracle of a chicken hatching from an egg. Cell phones came out and videos were shot and we are sure that they were posted on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Mrs. Pillers is the proud teacher of the first arrival this Spring!

We are hoping that there are more on the way as we continue Hatching Healthiness at Moss Haven Elementary!

Farm Day At The Fair

Our farm partnerships continue to expand our growing and learning in many directions. We have been working with local Master Gardeners as well as Texas A &M Agrilife folks. They are a wealth of information with great programs for our students. This past week our 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders were invited to attend Farm Day At The Fair at our Texas State Fair. They were able to learn the farm/agriculture end of things during the trip. The kids loved every minute and took home a bunch of learning. It was a great trip for our kids!

Thanks to everyone involved in this program. You did a great job of broadening our city farmers' knowledge base!

It's All About The Chicks

The chickens really do steal the show. They make our farm more of a farm. Live animals intrigue kids, especially our feathered friends. This summer, we had several families sign up to be chicken wranglers for a week. In doing so, they got to harvest eggs and hang out in the coop. The experience was great for all involved.

Thanks Moss Haven Families for all that you do to help our farm program grow! We couldn't do it without your incredible support!

Chicken Suppliers We Love

When you have a coop full of chickens, you have to have a source for chicken supplies. In our area, we have several to choose from. Each one is a great resource. Check them out!

A new local Lake Highlands hardware / urban farming store opened recently and we are big fans! They have all the chicken supplies that you will need to bring a flock to your house. They also have great hardware, tools, plants and gift items with awesome friendly customer service!

North Haven Garden Center has been around for some time. Their staff can offer assistance for all of your gardening needs. They offer high quality plants, garden supplies and chickens. Farmer Dan brings chicks out regularly to sell. Check out their website for more chicken information.

A stop into Roach Feed And Seed takes you back in time. This chicken supplier has been in business for 80 years. The facility has largely remained the same, with the original wood floors and the smell of sweet feed.  They have a wide range of items that they sell, from hay bails to seeds to insecticides and chicken scratch. Just an added bonus when you come to shop for chicken supplies.

Trinity Haymarket has been in business for over a year. They offer non-GMO, non-soy, and organic feeds, as well as supplies and tools for the small-scale farmer. They also have many locally grown products that they promote in their store and of course they sell chickens. They were very helpful and even offer a delivery service.

At Southland Feed Store you can pick up all the chicken supplies that you need. They have everything from bedding, to feeders to all types of chicken food. The staff is very knowledgeable and can help you with all of your chicken needs.

Tractor Supply is a national chain of stores and doesn't have that local sense of community, but they have chicken supplies nonetheless. You can also pick up some tools and Wrangler jeans when you are out that way.

Eden's Organic Garden Center is very local and in addition to chickens, they offer a summer long CSA or Community Supported Agriculture program. They are open on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of April - October, so plan accordingly.

Our community of chicken farmers continues to grow, as does the list of folks who provide chicken supplies. Keep these suppliers in mind when you start off to begin your own flock at home.
