When our school district offered up a piece of prime farming land, we jumped on the opportunity to have more dirt to plant in. Rather than standard raised beds that we have for the classes, this new plot has rows, like an actual farm field. Since we grow plenty for our classroom beds, we wanted to share our growing goodness and goodwill by creating a space where we could grow food to give away to others. So, we decided to turn our farm field into the Give Away Garden.
We have planted potatoes, turnips, beets, tomatoes, peppers and okra in the rows. These are all high yield crops and grow great in our area. The kid farmers are learning about sharing our organic goodness for the less fortunate, who often times don't have access to fresh food.
We had our first harvest of turnips that were sent to Network Ministries. They offer support to families in need of food. It was a great harvest of tasty turnips and their greens.
We are hoping to be able to provide much more in the years to come. Teaching kids the importance of giving back is a real farm value that grows out of this project. Growing Goodness on the farm carries on and hopefully will follow our little farmers for the rest of their lives!
