As always, this week was a week of growing at our school and on our farm! To kick it off, parents and staff who have been key players in our healthy initiatives celebrated our latest award. We were named a Healthy Zone School . It takes a lot of teamwork and effort between staff and parents to make this happen. We looked at all areas of health, nutrition and fitness. A few tweaks were made and.., ta da we earned this special award. Only 51 schools in all of North Texas have been given this title. Moss Haven is quite proud and we will be growing healthier kids because of the simple changes we have made on our campus. Oh, and did I mention, Troy Aikman was there.
It is still hot outside, but a few classes made it out to the farm this week. One of our new teachers, Ms. Heinrich loves the farm and is very excited to take her friends outside to enjoy learning in their garden plot.
Mr. Ley, our wonderful custodian loves the farm as well. He was given a Jerusalem melon for all the hard work he performs each day and always with a smile.
Three 4th graders decided that they had plenty of things at their houses. When they had a group birthday party, they asked their guests to bring a donation to our farm. The boys donated $500 to our farm program with birthday money. Two of the them went to meet Farmer Dan the Chicken Man and selected their two favorite chicks.
We asked the kids at our school to help name the new chickens. The boys chose 6 of the names on the list. Then we cut the names into strips and a secret drawing was held. Our new chickens are named Marilyn Monroe and Nugget (yes, like chicken nugget). The guys helped me wrangle them and load them up in a portable pen to bring to our school wide Round Up Assembly. They cranked up The Chicken Dance and we danced our way into the cafeteria. It was an exciting day for the school. Thanks Caden, Trip and Blake for your wonderful generosity! You guys rock!
Mr. Henderson even got in on the act. Thanks to Mr. Henderson for all the support he gives to our farm program too! We are farmers...,
